There is only one month left in the winter season, and Flint Hill’s sports teams are extremely proud of their achievements. The majority of the teams are doing exceptionally well in their respective conferences, with the varsity girls basketball, boys basketball, and climbing teams sporting winning records. While this may seem remarkable, one of the biggest stories of the 2017-2018 winter athletics season is the addition of a new sport at Flint Hill: indoor track.

This is the first year Flint Hill is offering winter indoor track, a great opportunity for athletes who seek conditioning.

According to short and medium-distance runner, junior Jack Magner, “Winter track is a much more relaxed and much less intense version of spring track, so it’s a great way to introduce yourself to the sport or just running in general.”

Indoor track is great preparation for spring sports such as lacrosse, baseball, softball, and tennis. In addition, “the races in indoor track are a little bit longer (500m instead of 400m, 1000m instead of 800m, and 300m instead of 200m), which usually helps runners in the spring when they’re running slightly shorter distances.”

Since this is the first year of indoor track, the team is pretty small. While it may seem like a disadvantage, having a small group of athletes has many benefits. A small team enables Coaches Davis, Murray, Patterson, and Uher to train their athletes on a more personal basis. This makes it easier for individual runners to improve their mechanics and run better in meets.

Having a small number of runners also allows for a tight-knit team.

Magner said, “the positivity and humor that everyone on the team brings to practice is probably my favorite part of winter and spring track. It feels very communal, and the friendly atmosphere keeps all of us going.”

Despite the small team size, the indoor track season was filled with impressive performances. Although Magner said the goal of the season was to make “personal/school records and make sure we’re in good shape for the spring season,” the team surprised other schools in meets.

The most impressive performance was by senior John Moxley in the 1600m. He ran a blazing 4:44 mile.

The team has high hopes of doing well the rest of the season.

“We all want to end this successful season on a high note,” Magner said.
