The Gatorade Player of the Year award is given annually to student-athletes who excel in academics, sports, and community service. Krissy O’Malley, the 5-foot-9 Flint Hill senior, won Virginia’s Volleyball Player of the Year award due to her GPA and her volunteer work as a Student Ambassador and in the club So Others May Eat. During Krissy’s high school career, she had 879 assists, 67 service aces, 188 digs, 47 kills, and 22 blocks. Krissy was also a four-year VISAA All-State selection and played outside of school on a prep team. In her prep career, she had 3,245 assists. When being interviewed by the Gatorade Player of the Year team, Liz Hall, the head coach at the Maret school, mentioned how Krissy was the “glue of the team.” She also said, “she always put the ball where it needed to be.” She recently signed a National Letter of Intent to play on scholarship at Liberty University this fall. When speaking to students at Flint Hill about Krissy O’Malley, a word that continued to come up was “well rounded.” Many believe this is the perfect interpretation of Krissy as she is very social and excels both in the classroom and on the volleyball court.
