Bond-Making at the Bonfire

With the 2023 Homecoming Week in the books, our Flint Hill Huskies have already begun reminiscing on all of the wonderful memories they’ve made and will cherish for a lifetime. For many members of the community, the Friday evening of Homecoming festivities is their favorite. The fun begins at 2:45 when the Den opens for business and family and friends have the opportunity to grab snacks for the busy night. Next, the sports games began! This year, there was a plethora of athletics to go and see: Girls Varsity Soccer, Boys Varsity Soccer, and of course, the Varsity Volleyball game all took place on the evening of the bonfire! On top of all of these events is one of the most uniquely Flint Hill Homecoming traditions the school has to offer, and that is the unforgettable bonfire the Upper School hosts every year on the Norris E. Mitchell Field.

The bonfire is truly an unforgettable experience, starting at 6:20 pm, hundreds of community members gather in awe to watch the enthralling glow of the roaring fire. In the words of freshman Bensten Schone, “It was really awesome to see so many students from every grade in the community! And, not to mention, it was a great opportunity to socialize and have fun with a great view!” The school also provided delicious hot-chocolate and glowsticks in light of the event. For 40 minutes the community felt closer than ever. Together, we experienced the anticipation of the ignition of the fire to the peak of its blaze, and finally, the slow and steady simmering down of the miraculous flames. In some ways, the bonfire can be seen as an analogy for a school year. Every husky gathers in excitement for it to begin, and together we experience the highs and lows of each day. And gradually, just as a fire does, the school season ends and we are left with an experience that will shine brightly in our memories for years to come.
