At the beginning of the school year, a new dress code was implemented every Friday. We discussed this during the town meeting at the beginning of the school year. On certain Fridays, students and faculty members are permitted to wear clothing that does not adhere to the regular dress code. According to the first Husky dress day, students were allowed to wear solid color sweatpants or shorts in green, black, gray, or navy. Additionally, the main change from last year is that Husky Dress will not occur every Friday, but instead on special occasions decided in collaboration with student leadership. To see student reactions to this change, I asked some about their thoughts on the new Friday Husky dress.
“I think it’s cool and it encourages students to keep up the spirit every Husky Dress day so we can have more of them,” said senior Salam Saidi. Saidi believes that the new Husky Dress allows students to show more spirit through special events. Additionally, he thinks that students can earn more Husky Dress days by showing spirit. The change to Husky Dress days allows students to show more school spirit on special occasions, where Flint Hill can demonstrate unity as a community.
“I don’t understand why the Husky Dress changed, and it feels inconvenient that we have to check whether we can wear athletic wear or not every Friday,” said senior Jackson Speer. Speer believes that there can be confusion about when to check specifically, even with email reminders. Even with reminding, I still agree that it can be confusing sometimes.
The new Friday Husky Dress policy has mixed reviews, but it has an overall positive effect on school spirit and unity. Although there are those who believe that it is confusing to keep up with the Husky Dress schedule, it should only be a matter of time before people adjust to the change. Overall, the new Husky Dress is a success due to its role in encouraging students to maintain a higher level of school spirit. Because it’s not every Friday, members of the Flint Hill community have the opportunity to ‘earn’ more dress days by showing school spirit. While the new Husky Friday Dress can take getting used to, it ultimately allows for the expression of school spirit on a larger scale, which can increase unity.
