Last week, the girls’ lacrosse program kicked off tryouts, setting the tone for what looks like an exciting season. Despite some unpredictable weather and a few adjustments throughout the week, the team showed flexibility, focus, and tons of energy. Many lacrosse players felt challenged yet dedicated during tryouts, and they are looking forward to an exhilarating season ahead of them.
Tuesday, the first day of tryouts, brought weather challenges, but the team adapted quickly. Practice was moved to the gym where athletes worked primarily with tennis balls and focused on passing drills. The day emphasized communication as well as fundamentals, allowing players to ease into tryouts while also helping core skills. On Wednesday, tryouts continued on the grass field where players participated in one-on-one matchups, additional passing drills, and competitive seven-on-seven play. The day not only tested skill, but also allowed athletes to connect more with teammates and coaches. Evaluations then resumed on Thursday, located at Oakmont. The practice was shorter, but highly focused and efficient. Players worked on ground balls, movement based drills, and more rounds of seven-on-sevens, keeping the intensity high.
Tryout results were announced on Friday, and the team has now shifted its focus to the season ahead. Evelyn Redding ‘28, a varsity lacrosse player, stated that she is “very excited for the upcoming lacrosse season.” She explained that the unity of the players is the key to a successful team, as well as the communication between teammates and coaches. In her opinion, tryouts had the perfect balance between hard work and team bonding. She is greatly looking forward to the beginning of her season.
With the first scrimmage against Madison approaching, players are already preparing, filled with anticipation. Furthermore, teammates are looking forward to upcoming games as well as their spring break trip to Pennsylvania. Overall, the first week of tryouts was productive and positive, setting high expectations for the season ahead. Make sure to show up and show out to cheer on your fellow Huskies!
