Each year, as the first semester ties itself up in a neat bow, the Flint Hill Fine Arts Department has an opportunity to showcase its mid-year accomplishments through a Winter Concert. One highlight of this musical time or holiday cheer is the Winter Choral Concert, and this year it was, per usual, a true spectacle of joy and the Husky Holiday Spirit.
Packed and fuelled by uplifting voices, passionate singers, and beautiful melodies, the Winter Choral Concert was a true highlight of the last few weeks of the semester. With vocal groups from 5th all the way to 12th grade performing, no voice went unheard in this time of musical splendor.
The concert lasted for a little over an hour with eighteen songs performed. Starting with the 5th grade, the youngest Huskies in the ensemble sang “Rhythm of One World,” a rhythmic piece based on unity, “Miracle of Lights,” a melodic call-and-response piece, “Tongue Twister Holiday,” a diction-heavy carol, and finally “I Ask for One Gift” to close out the 5th-grade solo section.
Next, the 6th grade had a spotlight, singing “Sarasponda,” a Dutch spinning song, “Candles in the Window,” a nostalgic holiday work, and a musically challenging medley from the Pixar movie, “Coco.”
Following the Lower School Huskies, the 7th and 8th grade choirs took the stage, singing “The Snow Carol,” a German work, “Pie Jesus,” a slow and beautiful holiday carol, “Bidi Bom,” a graceful Hannukah tune, the famed “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen, and closed out with an enchanting medley from the “Sound of Music.”
Following this, the Upper School Symphonic Choir took the stage to perform a complex, harmonious work titled “You are the New Day.” Then joined by the Upped School Concert Choir, the duo choirs sang the spiritual “Witness,” the Hebrew song “Shalom Charvarim,” a Pentatonix popularized “White Winter Hymnal,” and an “In the Heights” medley.
Then joined on stage by the 7th and 8th grade choirs, the ensemble vocalized the popular theme from “Elf,” a true classic. And lastly, per school tradition, all choirs took the stage to sing “Carol of the Bells,” a long-standing practice in the Choral department at Flint Hill.
Several star singers described how they experienced the night. Soloist Naomi Jacobs ‘26 shared, “The choir concert is so special, not only because of the talented voices, but also because it’s a mix of the Lower, Middle, and Upper school. Giving the older students an opportunity to connect with the younger members of the Flint Hill Community.” It can be safely said that Jacobs speaks for the choir as a whole when she shares the value of interlevel connection.
If you didn’t get a chance to come to the Winter Choral Concert this past week, the singing Huskies surely missed you! As the Second Semester rolls around, more singing will be heard at the Major Minors Winter Concert.
