Flint Hill School’s annual Arts Jam took place on April 15th at George Mason University’s Concert Hall in Fairfax. Arts Jam is a celebration of Flint Hill’s performing arts and an amazing opportunity for students to showcase what they have learned throughout the year. The show is a defining moment at the end of the school year. 

This year, the concert opened up with a duet between the choir and band playing “Alice’s Theme.” This was followed by productions by our symphonic and jazz bands, percussion ensembles, choir, and musical theater, with creative energy flowing through each performance. 

In addition to musical performances, students in the digital art class, “Topics in New Media Honors,” will work with performing artists to create three to five videos for the show. These videos are then used during Arts Jam for times when things need to happen backstage, such as wardrobe changes. Digital Arts Teacher, Ms. Catharine Huber, shares that she believes the videos were initially just a filler, but have become a special part of the show. 

Three videos were showcased in Arts Jam this year, one of which was titled “Hidden Musicians,” which introduced many musicians who are hiding among us as teachers at Flint Hill. This piece was especially powerful because each teacher explained how music had shaped them as people and, in turn, made them better teachers. 

Another highlight from the concert was the Major Minors’ performances of “Grenade” by Bruno Mars that showcased some of Flint Hill’s incredible singers as soloists, Sophomore Sabrina Kladakis and Senior Julia Murphy. “Grenade” was then turned into a smash-up of “Vienna” by Billy Joel. 

The Arts Jam is one of the biggest events at Flint Hill and showcases the students’ talents across various performing arts. Due to all the hard work put in by the Performing Arts Directors, Dr. Dereck Scott, Ms. Laura Moniuszko, Mrs. Sarah Pramstaller, and Ms. Abby Rozmajzl, this year’s Arts Jam flawlessly came together and inspired students, families, and teachers.
