Open Mic is an event that Flint Hill has done for some time now. It has always been really beneficial to the Flint Hill community, especially this year, for one reason: it brings the whole Upper School together. Rarely is there a time when almost the entire Upper School is in one place to watch or experience something, and Open Mic provides that outlet.
Although Open Mics are fairly spread out, each one results in a packed commons. The primary benefit of the event is providing a place for people to share their talents. Most people choose to sing, but the different choices in song and vocal styles bring a different vibe everytime. People might feel scared or nervous about showing their talents to the whole school, but everyone’s support really helps highlight what great talent Flint Hill has.
A smaller detail that makes it a great occasion is that it’s held in the commons instead of the gym. This allows everyone to be closer to each other and move freely, while in the gym, you would have to be seated in one specific place.
One thing that is enjoyable to see is the different kinds of talents that people show. Even though Open Mic is meant to be singing-related, if people wanted to show off other, maybe lesser-known talents, they are welcome to do so.
It’s also a really positive trend that a good number of people are signing up and putting themselves out there to perform in front of their peers. Coming back to the idea of bringing the community together, Open Mic stands alongside the Homecoming game or the Tip Off tournament as fantastic traditions deserving recognition. I think that it has been a great addition to Flint Hill for some time, but this year especially, you can see the impact it has on Huskies.
