Flint Hill students are rapidly approaching the finish line that is the end of their first semester of the 2025- 26 school year. The final three weeks between Thanksgiving and winter break can feel like a stressful and busy time for most students while completing their last few assessments. However, this time period is also an opportunity for students to grow by setting goals for themselves, reflecting on their school year so far, and working to finish the semester strong.
Many students, including myself, decided to set goals to guide them through these closing weeks. Establishing goals is a powerful way to stay grounded, determined, and motivated. For example, I try to set both academic and personal goals to maintain a school/life balance when things start to get stressful. Julia Klein ‘28 had a similar approach, as she shared that she “wants to work on spending more time doing hobbies, keeping up with challenging classes, and getting more sleep.” Klein recognizes how important it is to have an outlet in hobbies she enjoys during this busy time.
Another tool students use to get through this time is reflection. Reflection is crucial to learning and growth, and offers countless benefits such as improved decision-making, building self-awareness, and better performance by helping you understand your past actions. While reflecting, it is also important to give yourself credit and acknowledge what you did well. Taylor Oakes ‘25 described what she is proud of accomplishing this semester: “Something that went well was my ability to communicate with all of my teachers. I understood the topics discussed in my classes much more clearly by utilizing office hours.”
Finally, one of the best ways to breeze through these last three weeks of the fall semester is to look forward to winter break. One commonality among all students is the excitement shared over the upcoming holidays. Whether students are traveling over the break or staying home, winter break is a special time to relax and recharge. Most importantly, it is a wonderful chance to spend time with friends and family.
It is safe to say that Flint Hill students have many ways to help them stay on task. It may be goal-setting, reflecting, or looking forward; nonetheless, every student is different and can discover what works best for them. I am confident that the Flint Hill students will be successful in finishing the semester strong.
