Flint Hill School’s varsity volleyball team faced National Cathedral School in a hard-fought match on Thursday, October 2, with the Eagles edging out the Huskies in an energetic five-set thriller.
The Flint Hill Huskies, led by head coach Thai Nyguen, had a rough start to the game, going down by five points in the first set. However, they quickly came back, tying the scores at 20-20 and then 23-23. Everywhere you looked, a fan’s jaw dropped with shock. However, the set concluded with the Eagles winning 25-23.
The second set was just as close, with Cathedral winning 25 to 17. Yet, things quickly changed in the third and fourth sets, when Flint Hill beat National Cathedral by seven points both times. Due to the two teams splitting the first four sets, the match moved to a decisive fifth set, where National Cathedral pulled ahead and ultimately won, 15 to 10 in the set and three sets to two overall.
Despite being one of the longest homecoming games, fans were too invested to leave early. The fans were students from both the middle and upper schools, along with their families and friends. Many teachers came to watch, also, and everyone had a fantastic time.
Spirit Week also added to the excitement, as the SCA created a challenge where students are rewarded with prizes when showing school spirit and attending games. The winners will receive a gift card from Chipotle, Starbucks, or another fast-food place. This new challenge was widely well-received by the students.
An additional activity of Spirit Week was dressing up based on the theme of the game. This varsity game’s theme was blackout, and fans made sure to dress accordingly, which greatly added to the fun. All of these Flint Hill traditions contributed to creating a lively atmosphere at this volleyball game.
Although the match ended with the National Cathedral School winning, fans were cheering, laughing with friends, and jumping out of the stands, making for an exciting addition to the slate of Homecoming athletic events.
