As Spring flowers blossom across Flint Hill’s campus, so do new future opportunities for Husky Seniors in the form of college results. After a long year of working, applying, and waiting, Seniors are thrilled to be nearing the end of this year’s fierce admissions process, marked by institution responses. A pivotal time for a large part of our school community, and it is a time to be celebratory, respectful, and supportive.
Navigating this time of year is complicated for Seniors. While some are enthused about their choices, committing days after their decision, if not hours, some Seniors wait weeks to commit, recycling their options and visiting their choices. Similarly, while some are overjoyed with how this system worked out, others are left disappointed at how things finished. On another facet of the process, some Seniors finished their process in December, while others are still in the midst of difficult choices. Bottom line, this process and its results look different to everyone, and it’s a deeply personal experience.
Talking to the College Advising Office, Flint Hill has again performed well regarding matriculation throughout this admissions year. With a graduating class of 141 Seniors, ~10 were accepted into Top-20 schools (according to US News), including Stanford, the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), Cornell, Brown, Northwestern, the University of California at Berkley (UC Berkley), the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Chicago (UChicago), Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Michigan, and Washington University in St. Louis. Over 20 other Seniors got into schools ranked in the Top-30, including Emory University, Georgetown University, the University of Virginia (UVA), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC Chapel Hill), the University of Southern California (USC), and the University of Florida (UF). With this, Flint Hill is looking to send over 20% of its Senior class to schools ranked in the top 0.1% of institutions of higher education in America.
Speaking to some Seniors, this decision season has been taxing, yet rewarding. Senior Sam Jacobsen shared some insight on the process: “It was definitely a waiting game, but I’m grateful things worked out the way they did…it taught me a lot about patience and reflection on what is in my control and what isn’t.” Jacobsen will be attending Northwestern University this coming Fall.
Committed athlete and Senior Lucas Bermúdez Santa María shared some further advice on the decision-making process: “I was in between two schools, but really it all came down to the coaches…they defined it all to me. The team is the team because of the coaches. After thinking about things for around two months, I decided to commit in November, and it really facilitated my application process.” Bermúdez Santa María will be swimming at the University of Mary Washington in the Fall.
During this concluding phase of the admissions process, it is important to remain respectful of individuals’ privacy regarding their results and choices. It is critical to continue acting with respect and kindness throughout this process, seeing as each person’s decisions are their own. So, remember to celebrate our Seniors for a long, but rewarding journey! Go Huskies!
